Safety First on Floor Six!

Story by Noelle Jossoff

The city of Taft, located on the sixth floor of Sandoz Hall, is home to 50 fun and energetic girls. We all sat at our first town meeting staring at all the new faces we would eventually come to know by the end of the week. All three of our entertaining counselors, Senior Counselor Helen King of Kearney, Middle Counselor Emma Loberg of Lincoln, and Junior Counselor Elsa Knight of Clay Center started to break the ice by playing a few games. King went on to infer that she wanted this week to be fun and full of excitement.

The delegates started the week out by filing for offices and learning about proper flag etiquette. As 8:00 a.m. Monday morning rolled around delegates started voting for their city office officials. Soon to follow delegates began to file for state and county offices. Following, the “6th floor girls,” how they refer to themselves in one of their chants, walked to the Capitol for a tour. They learned all about the architectural design of the Capitol building as well as all the neat features that are hidden on the walls. They even jumped on the opportunity to go to the 14th floor to see all the beautiful views of Lincoln.

Monday night at the Whistle Stop Campaigns, the floors were getting intense as there were so many girls campaigning, but something seemed to make the sixth floor more unique. Many other delegates from various floors were stopping by saying how enjoyable and upbeat the floor was. Peyton Edwards of Lincoln, who was campaigning for Governor, wanted to make this night a little more fun not only for our “6th floor girls” but everyone else. “I want to have a dance party tonight,” Edwards said. So a few hours later Edwards got quite a few delegates together and had a dance party on each floor and ending on the 6th floor to enjoy themselves.

Throughout the first few days all the delegates and counselors made jokes to each other about “hitting signs” or “hitting parking meters.” We had a couple incidents that lit the mood, but took a toll on the victim. One of our counselors, Helen King, took a hard hit to a parking meter on Sunday night but recovered quickly. It then became a thing for the delegates to have fun and joke around with the instances. The girls found more humor as King did not take any offense to it, as the humor was being thrown her way. As the week continues the sixth floor delegates are looking forward to a fun learning experience and getting to their sessions “safely.”
