Joint Session: Dr. JoAnne

Girls State delegates of both Vap and Thomas counties had a further walk than the delegates of Boys State to Kimball Hall on the Unversity of Nebraska--Lincoln campus. The girls put up with the trek for the much anticipated first joint session of the week.

The speaker of the first session was Dr. JoAnne Owens-Nauslar. Dr. Jo has spoken to Boys State for 18 years and to Girls State for two. Dr. Jo specializes in the power of positive thinking and healthy living and activity.

Dr. Jo spiced up what could have been a uneventful lecture with hand claps, hearing and understanding checks from the delegates, stories and dance moves. She made sure the delegates understood what she was saying by interacting with them and making them repeat certain parts back to her. Dr. Jo also encouraged inter-State interaction by telling people to turn to their neighbors to pay them a compliment or to repeat a lesson.

Dr. Jo stressed to the delegates that enthusiasm is an attractive quality, to motivate others with your speaking and negotiation skills and that if you are passionate about what you do in life you will never have to worry about employment or money. She also stressed that you can either be a pessimist and look at the bad in the situation or be a positicationist and look for the good in the bad.

The first joint session of the week got both States acclimated with each other and built their enthusiasm for the rest of the week. The next joint session will be held on Wednesday evening.
