Poppies, poppies every where: ALA Poppy Presentation

For more than 90 years, Americans have been wearing red paper poppies in memory of our veterans. The American Legion Auxiliary, who presents the poppies, was created in 1919 right after World War I. They began distributing the poppies due to the sight of the flowers on the battlefields of Flanders Fields. These poppies act as memorials to all those who have sacrificed in the name of their country and represent the blood shed during wars and conflicts.

The poppies used in the program are hand made by veterans, who are given a stipend for their contribution. The program allows people to donate money and other items to our U.S. soldiers and veterans, though each poppy is given away for free. The program helped raise over two million dollars last year.

There are also other ways to contribute to the program. One example is the art contest for high school students. The artistic ability is not the only point judged. They are looking for emotional and sentimental meaning in the posters.

You can contact the Nebraska American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program at (402) 663-4445 for more information on this program. Please help remember our troops by wearing these poppies.
