Story by Michelle Hunt
On Tuesday, June 6, the Gubernatorial candidates had a debate. There was one girl from the Federalist and one from the Nationalists. Kate Klute is the Governor for the Nationalist party. Klute was interviewed after the debate and was asked more about more of her thoughts and rolls for Governor.
Q: What do you think is something that Girls State is beneficial for?
A: Definitely to build confidence. Being in front of 400 people—if you’re really into government this is definitely the place to be. Getting out of your comfort zone—because when I came here I was planning on a small part and then I ran for governor.
Q: What do you think could be changed to make Girls State an even more memorable experience?
A: I would like to do more with the floors rather than just sessions. I love my floor but I don’t really know people from others. Instead of just campaigning.
Q: What did you plan to do when you started to run for governor?
A: Well my mom is really creative so she helped me. I came up with my name, ‘Make America Kate again.’ I wasn’t expecting to have such an audience. Like I would walk into a room and have people yell ‘Kate!’ and I didn’t even know who they were.

Q: What are your thoughts on lowering taxes on land used for agriculture?
A: I think farming and cattle is a difficult business to be in. Farming really depends on the weather how it does, so I think we should lower taxes for the land used for agriculture.
Q: What are your thoughts on creating more special education classes for learning disabilities that don’t have a special education class?
A: Obviously a dyslexic person doesn’t have the same problems as someone with ADHD or ADD but if you could find a place where they fit and learn. There isn’t enough teachers to help with them if you find how they learn and help them that way.
