Floor Five: The City of Roosevelt

Story by Hannah Cass

Each floor has it’s own unique citizens and experiences, so it’s important to take a look into the details of each one. Floor five, known as the city of Roosevelt, was a very political floor. Annie Johnson said, “My favorite part about girls state so far is getting to talk to the other girls and hearing all the different perspectives and discussing them.” But, Amanda Dickerson’s least favorite part was that “it seems like some of the candidates selected were picked based off of popularity rather than education.” Girls have been discussing that there should have been a debate before the preliminary candidates were selected. If that were to happen, the results wouldn't be based off of name recognition and more off of education and involvement in politics.

A huge part of winning your position is campaigning. Steps of the process are putting up signs, coming up with a slogan, and going around and talking to people. When asked about how she campaigned successfully for her positions, Annie said “I campaigned by trying to keep a high energy presence as well as my slogan and just trying to appeal to the girls on a more personal level.”

Jade Gonzales also shared her preference on what she wished was different about girls state, “I wish there was more of a focus on issues in our state rather than the government processes itself.”
