Places of interest: Memorial Stadium

By Montana Markus

Throughout our time here at Girls State, the ladies have traveled to many different places. On Tuesday they traveled to the home of the Huskers, Memorial Stadium. As they arrived at the stadium, the delegates were introduced to their tour guide and began a tour to the stadium. The first thing on the agenda was to watch a video highlighting the three Heisman winners from the University of Nebraska: Johnny Rodgers (1972), Mike Rozier (1983), and Eric Crouch (2001). These three men had tremendous success here at the University when they played here.

As the tour moved on, our guide led the delegates through the doors of the best place to be on any Saturday morning in the fall, Husker Nation. The tour guide was trying her hardest to fill the delegates with the utmost information about the stadium. However, the next thing she knew was that she had about 30 girls staters frantically running about taking selfies, rolling on the turf, and breathing in the wonderful air of Memorial Stadium. As you can imagine, rounding all these teenage girl delegates up off the field was more of a challenge than herding cats, but she did her job very well.

The tour continued throughout the building to explore the largest training center most of the delegates had ever seen! Ndamukong Suh made a generous donation recently and this training center was expanded even more. Even though when someone refers to the Huskers most people automatically think of the handsome football players, there are many others sports teams that train at the facility. The soccer team training center was just down the hall and around the corner. There the delegates saw both the training center of the soccer players and the indoor training field, which happens to be under construction right now. Last but not least, the tour guide brought the citizens to the training center of the 2015 National Volleyball Championship winners, the Nebraska Husker Volleyball girls. This training center was an enormous room with every piece of equipment under the moon.

As the tour came to an end, the girls staters said their goodbyes to their amazing tour guide and signed their name in the guest book. Hopefully, the next person to come through looks down and sees names of girls staters and feels proud. Coming straight from your own Cornhusker Girls Staters, Go Big Red!
