Learn to love it

By Ellen Budell

Service Learning citizens learned to kick it up a notch! Service learning was one of the various activities accomplished during Cornhusker Girls State. This activity taught the citizens the value and love of doing things for others. They brought their joy to others in their community by making cards and table decorations for veterans in homes and hospitals, and playing with children at the Malone Community Center.

On Tuesday, the citizens got together and went to work on making cards for veterans. They set off and began to make different decorations for the season such as Christmas trees, bunny rabbits, and Fourth of July stars. Through their work, they learned the value of volunteering. “It brings extra joy to people’s lives,” said Kathleen Medill. “It was a nice way to relax from the busy day while helping the people in the community.” These cards are going to the veterans in homes and hospitals in the cities of Grand Island, Scottsbluff and Omaha.

The citizens in Service Learning found new ways to help people and are eager to bring them back to their own towns and communities after Girls State. They looked forward to bringing a positive outlook to these people through their volunteer work. From working on tray decorations to playing with children, they learned to appreciate the small things and never stop helping others.
