Four hundred girls from across the Cornhusker State watched the hard campaigning work of their peers pay off yesterday at the inauguration ceremonies. Walking to the Capitol building proved just as hot as expected; the temperature outside was 94 degrees! However, the walk proved well worth it as elected and appointed girls state officials were sworn in and promised to do their very best in their roles.
The main event was the swearing in and inaugural address of Girls State Governor Taylor Schendt. Emma Redinger, Supreme Court Justice and former opposing candidate, swore Schendt into office. In her short but sweet speech, Schendt thanked her counselors, friends and mother and stated how honored she was to have been elected to such an important position.
Girls state provides the 400 girls who are lucky enough to attend some incredible experiences, such as taking an oath of office in the rotunda of the most impressive capitol building in America. The memories of this awesome activity will stick with us for a lifetime.
