Fourth floor shenanigans

By Casey Frerichs

The fourth floor of Cornhusker Girls State was known as the city of Lincoln. The junior counselor was Kathryn Budell, middle counselor was Kelsey Gretch and senior counselor was Annette Gloystein. Budell has been involved in Girls State for two years, Gretch for three years and Gloystein for 14 years. The counselors could all agree that Girls State is a wonderful experience and that citizens will leave loving it. The opportunity to see the growth of not only the delegates but the newly forming friendships is something the counselors adore.

“It’s great to see the transformation from the awkward hellos to the crying goodbyes,” Budell stated.

City campaigning went well for Lincoln. One memorable way of campaigning was “Vote for Ri-Lei!” and “Be a fan!” as Rileigh Heller handed out Hawaiian leis and hand fans. One of the appreciated posters was a piece of paper with a mirror in the center that stated “This person is going to vote Casey Frerichs for senator.” Along with trinkets and posters, one other method of campaigning was handing out candy, which proved successful for elected mayor Hannah Donahue.

The girls on the fourth floor had a blast. However, with numerous delegates came common names. To differentiate between Morgan Leefers and Morganne Randles, candidates would call Leefers “Regular Morgan” and Randles “Fancy Morganne.” More bonding arrived when county and state campaigning began. Delegates helped each other out with the tedious taping, writing and running around. Kyla Stauffer and her little gang consisting of Ramey Vachal, Casey Frerichs and Savannah Nelson taped smarties and wrote slogans on countless popsicle sticks. Playing games on phones, tossing around a beach ball and solving city problems were all of the other fabulous occasions for the delegates of Lincoln to get to know one another.
