Kylie Jipp was declared the winner of the general election for Girls State Governor on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.
However, the election process for this coveted state office began on Monday, June 5, 2017, when interested citizens filed for office and began to campaign for Girls State Governor. Whistle stop campaign strategies varied from throwing candy to shouting chants, and Jipp’s campaign utilized a unique strategy of handing out sticky notes and using the slogan “Get a Grip and Vote for Jipp.”
On Tuesday, Girls State citizens in the Nationalist and Federalist parties voted for their respective candidate to advance to the general election. “I was shocked about moving on from the primaries, but had prepped for the debates just in case,” said Jipp.
Following the announcement of the Nationalist finalist, Kate Klute, and the Federalist finalist, Jipp, the two candidates answered questions from fellow citizens in a gubernatorial debate. “I felt I did extremely well in the debate [because of] my information on current events and being able to answer most of the questions.”
Later Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the final two candidates participated in whistle stop and rapid fire campaigns, making sure to fully utilize their time to advocate for themselves. Jipp had been preparing for this all along, reviewing the Nebraska Blue Book every night and practicing answering questions with the citizens on her floor.
The citizens then took to the polls to vote for their Governor as well as other state and county offices. Jipp was feeling confident about a potential win after her performance in the debate and rapid fire campaigning, and sure enough, her name was announced as the next Governor of Girls State. “I started balling and jumped up and did a breakfast club punch...it was kind of a surreal experience.”
Jipp wants to gives advice to future Girl State attendees and let them know that, “if you ever don't believe in yourself, believe that someone else believes in you.”
