On June 3, approximately 200 Nationalist Party members crowded together to freely express the pillars that they felt their party should stand on. This platform debate was nothing short of an incredibly passionate exchange of ideas from all ends of the political spectrum.
Among the most notable topics disputed upon was whether or not Nebraska should house charter schools.
A charter school is an independent, yet publicly funded school established by a group of individuals under the terms of a charter with a local or national authority.
The topic instantly sparked a fiery debate, as at least a dozen girls stood to voice their opinion on the matter.
The original motion stated that the Nationalist Party moved to ban charter schools in Nebraska. The argument in favor of this proposal proclaimed that the tax money being taken away from the public schools to be pumped into the charter schools was unjust.
Immediate opposition arose to this claim. It was argued that if a student attended a charter school, their tax money and their parents’ tax money should be given strictly to the charter school since they had no affiliation with the public school.
Due to the fervent support of charter schools, an amendment was swiftly added to the proposal. The new platform stated that the Nationalist Party sought to merely impose regulations upon charter schools.
The amendment was passed by a narrow vote, but the motion was finally shut down with a floor vote.
The newly-elected Nationalist Party Chairman Annie Jia led the discussion, and was assisted by Vice Chairman Regan Smith and Secretary/Treasurer Sophia Kriz.
After lengthy debate, the Party established its platform. The Nationalist Party moved to increase environmental protection by increasing research in renewable energy resources, to keep its promises that America made to its veterans by providing assistance specifically for physical and mental health, to decrease the taxes upon land used for agriculture, to increase state funding for orphanages and foster care and their programs, and to extend their highest gratitude to the American Legion Auxiliary for its opportunities and programs, and to the University of Nebraska Lincoln for their continued hospitality throughout the week.
The 2017 Nationalist Party debate was definitely a discussion to remember. Diverse opinions were heard, ideas were shared and issues were debated respectfully. Thanks to the guidance from the counselors, the strong leadership of the chairs and the continued cooperation of the members, a very strong platform was established for the Nationalist Party.
