Floor Three counselor profiles

By Madison Talbert

The city of Buchanan was full of many different voices. Floor three had citizens from all over the states, even though we come from different places. Buchanan became a close group throughout the week. This floor wouldn’t have been the same without the three counselors Kathy, Katie and Rebecca.

Kathy Mazur was Buchanan’s senior counselor. Mazur has been a senior counselor for seven years. She attended Gretna High School and was an alternate for Girls State. Even though Mazur didn’t attend Girls State, she became a counselor through the American Legion Auxiliary. She has been in the Auxiliary for forty-one years. Advice she would give delegates would be to keep an open mind and get as involved as you can.

Katie Bartels was floor three’s middle counselor. Bartels attended Girls State in 2013 and graduated from Emerson-Hubbard High School. Her favorite part of Girls State was getting to talk to all her floormates and meet new people. Bartels has been a counselor for the past two years. Giving the citizens a fun experience and wanting to be a good leader is what made her come back and be a counselor. Advice she would give to delegates would be to have fun and make new connections with people.

Rebecca Riley was the junior counselor in the city of Buchanan. Riley attended Girls State in 2014 and her senior counselor was Kathy Mazur. She graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic High School and is now a cheerleader at Hastings College. Riley’s favorite part of her Girls State experience was meeting new people with different views from all over the state. Thinking outside the box and communicating to other citizens is the advice she would give to this year’s citizens.

The city of Buchanan changed throughout the week. At first delegates were shy, but by day three all came out of their shells. Citizens of Buchanan created many new friends and a lifetime of memories.
