At 2016 Cornhusker Girls State, citizens from across Nebraska congregated with delegates from Cornhusker Boys State to form the Boys and Girls State Choir. Three delegates, Amy Abbott, Darienne Blair and Maria Smal are passionate about choir.
The choir rehearsed throughout the week to perfect the songs. The choir was directed by Pete Eklund, and the pianist was John Kosch. The students performed three pieces: American Anthem; Fear Not, Dear Friend and American Finale.
Blair of DC West remarked upon the Girls State Choir, “I like that we were singing with a different variety of voices.” Abbott added that the choir was big and it was nice to meet new people.
Smal of Omaha stated, “This choir was smaller than the one at my school. I liked the size, and the director, Eklund, is very talented.”
The individuals involved were knowledgeable about singing and had extensive experience. Many girls had been involved in choirs for many years. Blair had been involved since fifth grade, and Smal had been participating since kindergarten. The girls also advocated for the choir by showing their passion.
“I do everything I can with choir at my school,” Smal said excitedly.
Abbott decided to participate in the choir because she thought it would be fun and loves to sing. They all also enjoy singing for a plethora of reasons. Blair said that she can sing very high notes. Abbott indicated that singing helps one express him or herself. Smal added that singing is calming.
However, there were a few difficulties. “It was hard to blend all the voices because people have learned different techniques,” stated Blair.
Abbott thoughtfully added that it was challenging if one was not familiar with the director. These minor difficulties did not upset the girls; however, there was another problem. A unique aspect about the choir was that it was jointed with the boys. Many other Girls State activities didn’t include the boys. The ladies agreed that it was interesting to interact with the young men. The students put the battle between the sexes aside to succeed together as a group.
Blair mentioned, “It was nice to have their sections because it created a bigger and louder sound.” Smal simply said that it’s nice to see the opposite gender.
The choir concluded by performing at a concert for all of the Boys State and Girls State attendees. The concert was held in Kimball Hall.
