Campaigning

Dear mom and dad, I'm fine and I'm having FUN!

Whether by bus, car, or van, the 2015 Cornhusker Girls State citizens arrived from near and far on the morning of May 31. After being registered, the girls carried their bright eyes and anxious hearts (while their parents carried their luggage) up to their respective floors to be acquainted with their new roommate, counselors and fellow community members. The citizens were then well versed on all Girls State rules during their first town meeting and were shown a brief glimpse of what life will be like at CGS.

Prior to the citizens dismissing to their activities for the week, (media, service learning, band, choir and places of interest) counselors and citizens noticed a peculiar gas-like smell escaping from the halls and lobbies of Mari Sandoz Hall. Within 15 minutes all the citizens and staff were safely evacuated from the building, and ten minutes later the Lincoln Fire Department and Police had arrived to survey the building. The citizens enjoyed their free time outside by playing games and continuing to mingle with their fellow citizens. After 20 minutes spent in the great outdoors, the fire department had cleared the building, allowing citizens to be dismissed to their respective activities. Following their individual adventures, the citizens returned to their floors to file for city offices.

Sunday evening brought walking to the union, session and whistle stop campaigns. Oh my! All full of laughter, education and memories in the making for the CGS citizens. Monday will bring election for city offices, filing for county and state offices and the first joint session with Cornhusker Boys State (Oh boys!). Check back regularly for updates on everything Girls State!
